Jig casting : metal jig, how to fish right?

Jig casting, also called casting jigs, jigging spoon or small metal jig. Jigs are perfect for lure fishing. These lead lures have the perfect density for record casting distance performance. Jigs are perfect with a simple linear retrieve as you would with soft lures, but at all depth of water, not just on the bottom. Widely used for sea bass fishing, a collection of casting jigs is available for freshwater predators. They are designed for zander, pike, perch and black bass using a small, light metal jig casting.

What is a jig casting, casting jigs or jigger spoon?

First of all, this lure may be called something else, but it is the same type of lure: jig casting, casting jigs or jigger spoon. Its metal body, made of lead and alloy or tungsten, is covered with a holographic foil that emits light flashes. It is covered with a cosmetic paint, completed by one or more layers of glossy varnish. This small metal lure, for freshwater or sea fishing, can be equipped with hooks in different ways.

With a single treble hook, it is perfect for fast retrieves for pike, perch and zander, in linear or stop and go mode. This rig is only used in clear and clean areas. A complementary rig consists in using a single hook for hard lure, called single hook, allowing to fish crowded areas for zander. We explorte in priority rocky scree, rocky breaks, dead wood and plant cover, black bass and pike are often part of the game!

This rig is made up of one or a pair of assist hooks mounted on the head, this rig is versatile for freshwater fishing and allows you to fish "classic" areas. For sea fishing it is this assist hook rig that allows you to fish the best to not get hooked but also captures the fish attacking it in full recovery or vertical animation. The jig casting with a weight of 8 to 10 gr is ideal for freshwater fishing, we can go up to 12gr to go down more quickly. The heavier weights are reserved for rivers such as the Seine and the Rhone in case of flooding.

For sea fishing we use jigs castings with a minimum weight of 15gr (light jigging) and can go up to 40 grams. Above this weight, we talk about jigs (jigging and shore jigging). At sea, these metal lures are capable of capturing all marine predators, as long as the equipment is planned accordingly. For tuna and bonito fishing, a reinforced structure allows the lure to resist the violent rush of tuna.

How to fish for zander with a jig casting spoon

To begin with, we are dealing with a very whimsical percid, which does not hesitate to give a hard time to the best predators fishermen. The most basic fishing, with the jig, with a linear retrieve, is effective to locate the active fish.

Every two casts we alternate a linear retrieve with bottom hopping. To do this, after having made contact with the bottom, a pull is made and then the descent of the jig is left on a semi-slack line to keep contact with the bait to feel the bite. It is important to leave free the descent of the jig with a semi-tensioned line, a fully tight line bridles its downward shimmy action.
In summer a pelagic fishing with light models, max 11gr, is effective for the zander fishing vertically.

At certain times of the year, these zander, solitary, are suspended in the water column sometimes in the middle of the lake. These fish are not very fearful because few fishermen think of going to look for them so far. To carry out a pelagic fishing of the zander, a casting jig is effective, it allows to counter the speed of drifting thanks to its fast descent.

The benefit of the jig casting, in small size 10 g, allows for pelagic fishing, in the presence of wind to go down quickly and remain in the strike zone in front of a big zander. Casting jigs are used for long distance fishing from the shore or from a boat which makes them one of the best lures for fast fishing. The small metal jig is the ideal complement to a crankbait when depths exceed 6 meters.

To conclude, the jig casting has its place in the lure kit of the best zander anglers.

When to fish with a jig casting for perch and pike?

First of all, thinking that you can't fish for pike with a jig casting is a mistake! Indeed, it is a lure that is very useful when all the others take too much time to cover the deep breaks of the big lakes where the big pike are. With a single hook set up (single hook for hard baits), you can fish heavy cover.

Its weight allows it to pierce the matted surface weed to access the best pike areas in the middle of the grass. The specialists of perch angling have always known about tin fish baits, and modern casting jigs are its worthy successor!

To find perch in priority we use a small metal jig with a waddling animation, which is ideal from a boat near the water discharge. The ability of the jig casting to be cast at a good distance, allows a linear fishing to locate the schools of active perch in a short time.

During the winter frenzy of perch on small bleak this lure is irreplaceable. The jig casting, with its slender and narrow profile, is reminiscent of the geometry of bleak and small chub. Finally, when you witness surface activity and fish busting, a fast linear retrieve and sub-surface is very efficient.

Sea fishing: the multi-species lure!

First of all, those who fish with lures at sea know that certain areas have specifications that change with the weather. Temperature and depth of the fish, the need to reach deep water in wind / current and of course the speed of a drifting boat!

The jig casting has a high density that no other lure of this size is able to match, especially for its speed of descent. The descending phase of the jig is important especially for the first cast where you present your lure in their environment. It is often on the first cast that you get bit. For a fishing in rising phase, with an retrieve composed of jerk (pulled by the rod), the beginning of the rise is essential to convince the inactive fish.

Casting jigs are also a first choice lure for linear or bottom hopping for snapper. These fish are part of the sparidae family and feed close to the bottom. The jig casting allows regular results all year long on these species.

Fishing for sea bass with jig casting, from a boat or from the shore, is excellent. For shore jigging, it is preferable to go out in bad weather, which brings a lot of food on the edges thanks to the surf. The small size of the jig casting also makes it an irresistible lure for the fishing of rock fish, used to the big lures. Rock fish and grouper are less wary of the smaller size of a mini jig. It is also one of the best lures for mackerel and redfish fishing when casting on visible surface busting action. In conclusion, when you start fishing in a new area, the jig casting allows you to identify the species present in the area in a record time, to adapt your techniques.

Color and rigging!

First of all, as explained above, the most important thing in this technique is the tackle. You should be able to forget it’s even there but serves its purpose on big fish. For the basic colors it’s pretty easy: clear waters natural color or clear, by dark waters or stained; flashy tiger and bright colors. In the absence of a hit after half an hour try something odd, it might be what’s needed to trigger the first hit.

In conclusion, jig casting is versatile and allows you to fish everywhere in all conditions forfreshwater and saltwater predators. All you have to do is choose the right weight and rigging option for the lure.
