Lure fishing technique, the best tips

The lure fishing techniques are the easiest element of fishing to master. You only need to learn to cast and retrieve each type of lure in the strike zone and subsequently set the hooks. There’s not much more that lure anglers need to master than cast your lure and retrieve it for many successful fishing trips. You will often note that beginners enjoy insolent success. It’s maybe just because their lure fishing technique is simple and doing less is better than doing more. Surface lure fishing is the most exciting technique and visually stimulating. It covers water quickly, particularly shallow water and is the most fun rod reel fishing. But it catches bigger fish and will help find the fish because even a missed strike is visible and shows the presence of fish.

Most people think topwater is only limited to summer mornings and evenings and for bass. That couldn’t be further from the truth, topwater catches perch and pike, works all day long, and can catch fish almost all year long but the coldest month. And as mentioned before, it catches larger than average fish.

Lure fishing technique for hardbaits

We typically define hardbaits as any lures with treble hooks. By and large, it’s a diving plug or crankbait and jerkbaits. The latter are both great in freshwater and saltwater alike. The technique relates around using the right color and speed of retrieve. Boat positioning and the general area are more important than anything else!!

Crankbaits however require a little more in terms of lure fishing technique. The first consideration is water depth. Every time you fish with lures you should be aware of the water depth. Some crankbaits are designed for shallow water and others for deep water. Pick the right one to fish on or close to the bottom. Make sure you’re around bait fish, if they are suspended over deeper water it might not be necessary to hug the bottom to catch fish.

Soft bait technique

Soft plastic lures require the most technique to give them a life-like behavior. That being said some just need to be retrieved to catch fish. The most common rig is a simple jig head threaded on a soft plastic. Just cast and retrieve or hop on the bottom.

The famous Texas rig shines in heavy cover for hard-to-reach fish. The fisherman needs to drag and hop the lure on the bottom. Even as the lure is sinking it’s attractive and a technique is needed to find the bite and set the hook at just the right time.

Other rigs such as drop shots or neko rigs are designed for finesse fishing in clear water. It takes a bit more technique to rig and fish correctly. It’s a last resort method when all fail. Have a light spinning rod ready for finesse technique, even as a follow-up strategy when other lures stop producing. Frequently a large school of fish will bite a lure with gusto and then quit. You fire them back up with a finesse rig such as a drop shot.

Finally, the best lure fishing technique is the one you master. Better fish with something you’re comfortable with rather than goofing around with a fancy technique you found on the internet. Most successful fishermen have a handful of technique they’ve mastered to art form and know everything there is to know about it.
